Alt text: describing an image to someone who cannot see it
Alt text is the description read aloud when someone cannot see the image. It is also what Google Images has to go on. The part people get wrong is not the writing — it is that decorative images should have deliberately empty alt text, so a screen reader skips them instead of announcing a divider.
Images with no alternative text
What SEOPert detected
One or more images have no alt attribute.
What this means
Alt text describes an image for people using screen readers and for Google Images. Missing alt text is an accessibility barrier.
How to fix it
- For each image that shows something meaningful, add a short description of what it shows (e.g. “Technician repairing a boiler”).
- Decorative images (dividers, backgrounds) should have empty alt text so screen readers skip them.
On WordPress
- Go to Media → Library, open each image and fill in “Alternative Text”. Images already placed in pages may need the alt text set in the Image block too.
On Shopify
- For product images: open the product, click the image, and choose “Add alt text”.
On Wix
- Click the image in the editor → Settings → “What’s in the image? Tell Google”.
If you are handing this to a developer
Add alt attributes to all <img> on the listed URLs (alt="" for decorative images).
Check it worked. Re-run your audit: no images should be listed as missing alternative text.
