What these tools cost, and when not to buy ours.

Almost every comparison of SEO tools is written by someone who earns a commission when you click through. That is why they all end the same way. We are not an affiliate of any tool on this page and earn nothing if you buy one — so this page can tell you to go and spend your money somewhere else, and sometimes it does.

Before anything else

You may not need to pay anyone.

Most small websites are not held back by anything a subscription would fix. Set up Google Search Console, run our free audit, and fix what comes back. That costs nothing and it is genuinely where the results are for a site with a few dozen pages.

Paid tools earn their money on scale and on data we cannot see — keywords, backlinks, competitors. If you do not yet need those, you do not yet need them.

By what you are trying to do

Eight jobs, and what we would actually use.

Sorted by the question rather than by the brand, because nobody wakes up wanting a subscription.

Find out what is technically wrong with my website

SEOPert, free

This is the one thing we are built for. 10 pages, no account, about a minute.

Get a prioritised fix list I can hand to a developer

SEOPert Complete, $29 once

Up to 250 pages, every finding with the fix written out, and a developer hand-off page.

Know whether Google is actually indexing my pages

Google Search Console, free

Your real data, from Google. Nothing else can give you this — not us, not anyone on this page.

Find out what people search for, and how often

Ahrefs or Semrush

Keyword research needs an index we do not have and are not going to build. Buy one of theirs.

See who links to me, or to a competitor

Ahrefs or Semrush

Backlink data is the most expensive thing in this industry to collect. We do not collect it.

Track my position for a list of keywords over time

Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking

We do not do rank tracking, and a tool that checks once is no use for a thing you watch weekly.

Crawl a site with tens of thousands of pages

Screaming Frog

It runs on your own machine, so scale is a question of patience rather than of our page limits.

Manage SEO for dozens of client sites from one place

A full platform, not us

We have no multi-site dashboard and no API. An agency will outgrow us in a week.

The tools

What each one is genuinely better at.

Prices checked on 22 September 2026. They change, and every name below links to the source so you can see for yourself.

Free, forever

The only place your real Google data exists: which queries you appear for, how many people clicked, and which pages Google has actually indexed. No tool on this page can tell you that, including ours. Set it up before you spend a penny anywhere.

Free, forever

Google's own speed and Core Web Vitals measurement, straight from the source. We call the same service and show you the result, so if speed is all you need, you can skip us entirely.

Ahrefs

$29/month (Starter)

Subscription, monthly or annual

Backlinks, keyword research and rank tracking, on one of the two biggest data indexes in the industry. If you need to know who links to a competitor or what a keyword is worth, this is the answer and we are not.

Semrush

About $139/month

Subscription, monthly or annual

The widest feature set of anything here — keywords, backlinks, rank tracking, advertising data and content tools in one place. If you are running paid and organic search together, it does things nothing else on this list does.

Screaming Frog SEO Spider

Free, then £199/year

Free to 500 URLs, then an annual licence

Crawling at a scale and depth we do not attempt. It runs on your own machine, so a 200,000-page site is a question of patience rather than of plan limits. It is the tool technical SEOs actually use.

Moz Pro

see their pricing

Subscription

Keyword research and link metrics with a gentler learning curve than most, and a large body of teaching material behind it. A reasonable first subscription if you want to learn the field rather than just fix a site.

Where a price is missing, it is because nobody here has verified it rather than because it is hidden. We would rather say so than guess.

The part other comparison pages leave out

What we do not do.

None of this is on a roadmap. If you need one of them, one of the tools above is the right purchase and we are not.

  • Keyword research or search volumes
  • Backlink data — who links to you, or to anyone else
  • Rank tracking, daily or otherwise
  • Competitor keyword gaps
  • Content writing or optimisation scoring
  • A dashboard for managing dozens of client sites
  • An API

Ours, in full

No subscription unless you want one.

  • Free — 10 pages, every finding with its fix, no account, unlimited runs.
  • $29 once — up to 250 pages, the full action plan, a developer hand-off page. One payment, no renewal.
  • $19/month — the same audit re-run on a schedule, so you find out when something breaks. Cancel any time.
