No website yet

You may need less than you think.

SEOPert audits websites, so if you do not have one there is nothing here for us to check — and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can do is tell you what actually matters first, which for a lot of local businesses is not a website at all.

Claim your Google Business Profile first It is free, it takes about ten minutes, and for a business with no website it does most of the job a website would: your hours, phone, directions, photos, reviews and messages, shown to people searching nearby.

What to do, in order

  1. Claim and verify the profile. Search for your business on Google. If it is already listed, there will be a way to claim it. If not, create it. Verification is done by Google — by postcard, phone, email or video depending on the business — and there is no way around it.
  2. Set the primary category correctly. This does more than anything else you control. “Plumber” and “Bathroom remodeler” surface for different searches.
  3. Fill in everything. Hours including the days you are closed, service area, phone, photographs of the real place and real work.
  4. Ask satisfied customers for reviews, and reply to them. Review count and recency genuinely affect whether you appear.
  5. Then think about a website. Not before.

When a website is genuinely worth it

A profile is a listing on somebody else’s platform, with the fields they allow, and it can be suspended without much explanation. A website is the one thing about your business online that you own. It earns its keep when you need to:

  • Explain something a listing has no field for — how you price, how the process works, what makes the job go wrong.
  • Be found for what you do, not only for where you are.
  • Take bookings, quotes or payments without a phone call.
  • Show real work: photographs, before and after, the jobs you want more of.
  • Stop depending on a platform that can change its mind.

You may already have something we can check

A surprising number of businesses that say they have no website turn out to have a page somewhere:

  • A franchise or head-office page, or a supplier’s listing for you.
  • A marketplace or trade-directory profile with its own address.
  • A site a relative or a previous agency built years ago, on a domain nobody has looked at since.

That last one is worth five minutes: search your business name and see what comes up. An abandoned page still ranking is worth knowing about, and if you find one, it has an address you can paste into the audit.

If you found one

Paste it in and see what it says.

Free, no account. If it turns out to be a local business page, we check the phone number, address, hours and local markup too.

What we are not going to do

We are not going to take your details and tell you someone will be in touch. SEOPert does not build websites, and the partner network that handles work we do not do is not yet open for this. When it is, this page will say so plainly.

In the meantime the advice above is the whole of what we would tell you if you paid us, and it is free because it is worth exactly as much either way.
