Free llms.txt checker and generator
A short map of your site, for AI tools.
llms.txt is a proposed file that tells AI assistants what your business is and which pages matter. Check the one you have, or write one in a few minutes.
The honest state of play. llms.txt is a proposal from 2024, not a standard. No major AI company has said its crawlers use it, and Google has said it does not use it for Search. It will not change your rankings. It takes ten minutes, costs nothing and does no harm, so it is a reasonable thing to add once the things that do matter are in place.
Worth knowing
What goes in an llms.txt
- A name, as the first line:
# Smith & Sons Plumbing. The only required part. - A one-line summary, starting with
>: what you do, where, and for whom. - A little detail, in plain sentences, if it helps: areas covered, hours, how to book.
- Sections of links, each under a
##heading, as- [Boiler repair](https://...): same-day repairs. - An Optional section for pages that can be skipped, like the blog or old news.
Where to put it
It has to be at the root of your site, so it opens at yourwebsite.com/llms.txt.
- WordPress: some SEO plugins can now write one for you; check yours first. Otherwise upload the file to the site’s main folder with your host’s file manager.
- A site you or your developer host: upload it next to
robots.txt. - Wix, Squarespace and Shopify: these do not let you upload files to the root of the site in the usual way. Check your platform’s help pages or app store; if there is no option, skip it. Nothing is lost.
Once it is live, check it on the first tab.
What matters more
AI assistants mostly find businesses the same way search engines do: by crawling your pages and reading what is on them. A site AI crawlers are allowed into (check your robots.txt), with clear text, your details marked up as structured data and pages that load for crawlers, does far more than any llms.txt.
