The town, where people read it first

Two results, side by side: “Ace Plumbing” and “Emergency Plumber in Austin | Ace Plumbing”. Somebody in Austin with a burst pipe knows which one to click before reading anything else. The second one is not better optimised — it is just answering the question that was asked.

The homepage title does not name your town

What SEOPert detected

Your structured data names the town you are in, but the homepage title does not mention it.

What this means

Somebody searching for a service near them reads the town in the blue headline before anything else. If it is not there, your result looks less relevant than the ones that have it, whatever the page says further down.

How to fix it

  1. Put the town in the homepage title: “Emergency Plumber in Austin | Ace Plumbing” rather than “Ace Plumbing”.
  2. Keep it around 60 characters so the end is not cut off.
  3. Do the same on your main service pages, but only where it is true and reads naturally — a forced town name in every heading reads as spam to people as well as to search engines.
On WordPress
  1. Edit the homepage and set the SEO title in Yoast or Rank Math. For the site-wide template, check the plugin’s title settings.
On Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and Webflow
  1. Open the homepage’s SEO settings and edit the title tag.

If you are handing this to a developer

Update the homepage <title> and, where it reads naturally, the H1.

Check it worked. Hover over the browser tab of your homepage: the title should name your town. Re-run your audit to confirm.
