Meta descriptions: the sentence under your headline

A meta description does not help you rank. It helps you get clicked, which is a different and equally useful thing. When a page has none, Google assembles a snippet out of whatever text it finds — sometimes a menu, sometimes a cookie notice, sometimes the one sentence on the page you would least like a stranger to read first.

Pages with no meta description

What SEOPert detected

One or more pages have no meta description, so Google will write its own snippet.

What this means

The meta description is the short summary under your headline in Google results. A clear one earns more clicks; without it, Google guesses from your page text.

How to fix it

  1. Write one or two sentences (about 120–155 characters) per page saying what the visitor gets and why to click.
  2. Add it in the page’s SEO settings as the “meta description”.
On WordPress
  1. Edit each page and fill in “Meta description” in the Yoast or Rank Math panel.
On Shopify
  1. Open the item → Search engine listing → Edit → “Meta description”. Homepage: Online Store → Preferences.
On Wix
  1. Pages → page settings → SEO basics → “Meta description”.
On Squarespace
  1. Page Settings → SEO tab → SEO description.
On Webflow
  1. Page settings → SEO Settings → Meta Description, then publish.

If you are handing this to a developer

Add <meta name="description" content="…"> (120–155 chars) to each listed URL.

Check it worked. View each page’s source and search for name="description". Google may take a few weeks to show the new text in results.
