What your site looks like when somebody shares it

Someone finally recommends your business in a group chat, and the link arrives as a bare grey rectangle with your domain name in it. Open Graph tags are what decide that moment: the headline, the sentence and the image that travel with your address wherever it is pasted.

No social sharing tags on the homepage

What SEOPert detected

Your homepage has no Open Graph tags, so shared links have no title, description or image.

What this means

Open Graph tags control how your page looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn and messaging apps: the title, description and preview image.

How to fix it

  1. Set a social sharing title, description and image for your homepage in your SEO or social settings.
On WordPress
  1. In Yoast or Rank Math, open the homepage’s “Social” tab and set the title, description and image. Set a default image in the plugin’s Social settings.
On Shopify
  1. Online Store → Preferences → Social sharing image.
On Wix
  1. Pages → page settings → Social share: upload an image and set the title and description.

If you are handing this to a developer

Add og:title, og:description, og:image (1200×630) and og:url to the homepage.

Check it worked. Paste your homepage address into a social preview tool (for example the LinkedIn Post Inspector): it should show your title, description and image.
