Structured data: describing your page in a format Google reads

Structured data is a small block of machine-readable description added to a page: this is a business, here is its address; this is a product, here is its price. Google may use it to build a richer search listing. It is genuinely optional, it guarantees nothing, and adding markup for things that are not on the page is worse than adding none at all.

No structured data found

What SEOPert detected

No structured data was found on the pages checked.

What this means

Structured data describes a page in a format Google understands and can make your listing richer. It is optional: add it where it matches real content.

How to fix it

  1. Homepage: describe your business with Organization or LocalBusiness data (name, logo, address, contact details).
  2. Other pages: add a type only if it matches the page, such as Product for a product page or Article for a blog post.
  3. Never add markup for things that are not on the page.
On WordPress
  1. Yoast SEO and Rank Math add Organization/WebSite data: complete your business details in the plugin’s settings.
On Shopify
  1. Most Shopify themes include product structured data; for business details, ask your theme developer or use a structured-data app.
On Wix
  1. In the page’s SEO settings, Wix lets you add structured data markup under Advanced SEO.

If you are handing this to a developer

Add JSON-LD (Organization/LocalBusiness, WebSite; Product/Article where relevant) and validate with Google’s Rich Results Test.

Check it worked. Test the page with Google’s Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results): it should list the type you added with no errors.

Structured data Google cannot read

What SEOPert detected

Structured data was found but could not be parsed, so search engines will ignore it.

What this means

Your page contains structured data that Google can’t read because of a formatting error, so it is ignored.

How to fix it

  1. Open Google’s Rich Results Test, enter the listed page, and look for the reported syntax error.
  2. Fix or remove the broken snippet in the plugin, app or code that added it.

If you are handing this to a developer

Fix the JSON syntax in the listed pages’ <script type="application/ld+json"> blocks.

Check it worked. Test the page with Google’s Rich Results Test: it should read the structured data without errors.
